Fuck.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
How are we living in the same building? Isnât this supposed to be the most populated city in America? If she didnât already, she hates me now.
I set my takeout on the counter and donât even feel like eating anymore, which is very unlike me since I never pass up a meal. My roommates, Noah and Lucas seem to still be out, so I strip down to just my boxers in the hall and head into the bathroom. The scalding hot water hits my back as I stand in the stall shower and think about everything Sloane and I have been through the past two years.
After I finish recounting the weirdest two years of my life, I heat up the Chipotle bowl and sit on the couch to eat it. Scrolling Netflix, I realize thereâs nothing new I havenât watched so I decide to FaceTime Graham.
âLook who it is!â he answers.
âIs it Ethan? Howâs the city?â Emily appears from behind Graham with a huge smile.
âHey Em,â I greet her. âItâs fucking cold.â
âItâs January. Besides that, everything good?â Graham asks. âHowâs work? Roommates?â
âWorkâs great, roommates are cool.â I pause. âThere is one thing thoughâ¦â
âWhat?â
âSo, uh, Sloane lives in my building.â
âWhat?â his mouth hangs open. âYouâre fucking with me. Right?â
âDude, I wish.â
âHowâd you find out?â he asks.
So, I tell him the entire story from start to finishâ from spotting her on the street, to the awkward lobby encounter.
âAre you guys gonna talk about it?â
âProbably not.â I shrug.
âI donât understand you.â
âNeither do I.â
We hang up and I stare at the black TV screen. I wonder where Noah and Lucas are. I shoot a text in our group chat, hoping if theyâre out theyâll stay there for a while. I could use a drink.
~
âThere he is!â Noah waves me down. âGrab a beer from the bucket, youâve got winner.â
Darts are such a New York City thing. I donât think even one bar in Wilmington has them, at least none Iâve been to.
âSo, howâs your first official week in the city? Work kicking your ass yet?â Lucas asks.
âItâs going. Luckily not yet.â I reply.
âScrew you Lucas,â Noah says pulling the darts from the board. âBrady, youâre up.â
âAnyone ever tell you that youâre a sore loser?â Lucas mocks Noah.
âEvery damn day.â
Even though Iâve only been living here for exactly eight days, I can already tell Iâm going to like it. I never pictured myself as a city guy, but I also never thought Iâd land a job like this. I was grateful to the Clarks for providing me with a family and a life I didnât think I was worthy of. Iâve always been afraid of it but I think Iâm realizing that change is a good thing. A really good thing.
